Eric Stone was a painter and writer. He painted covered bridges and old-fashioned tools. His aim was to preserve in his art something of America's rural past. Stone tells the story of his earlier years when he inherited a fortune as a young man. Unfortunately, he squandered the fortune. Depressed, he left his home and traveled west, earning his keep as a sign painter. One day in the Midwest he was caught in a sudden shower and dashed into a nearby church while a worship service was in progress. Sitting in the back pew he felt out of place, but the service did bring back childhood memories. Not really listening to the sermon, he looked up for a moment and the preacher seemed to be pointing right at him, thundering, "The providence of God is your inheritance." Until that moment he had associated providence with a city in Rhode Island, but now he realized that providence meant "to provide." He had not lost everything. He still had the greatest inheritance of all; God had promised to provide for him. The Good Shepherd cares for us; that is provision enough. -- Hasler
