The evening at the support...

The evening at the support group had been an interesting one. Usually when Sally facilitated such groups she hoped for something meaningful to happen. Sometimes it did. Sometimes it didn't.
But that night had been interesting. All of the couples there had struggled with why they even needed to be in group therapy sessions. Some were still in denial when they had arrived that night. If it weren't for some outside influence pressing them to participate, they would probably have skipped the meeting.
What opened people up was Jake's comment that as much money as he and his wife had made, none of it seemed to matter when their son died in a car crash. Beth then talked about her alcoholism and the affair she had been involved in and how it had almost destroyed her marriage to Jeff. Then Ken talked about how much he had loved being so prominent in his community but when he was caught embezzling money from his company, all of his status and most of his friends would have nothing to do with him or his family.
Sarah's comment summed up the night so well. "It seems like when we focused on having as much of the world for ourselves as we could get, it all got out of perspective. It took a crisis to help us recognize what is really important in life."
