Ever since her husband had been killed in the Persian Gulf war, Carrie and her two small sons had moved to a small apartment near her work place. It was not the best neighborhood in town, but the apartment was clean and affordable with a handy little kitchen, two bedrooms, a living room and a bathroom.
One evening after all three had gone to bed, choking smoke startled Carrie awake. Within seconds she realized that the apartment was soon to be engulfed in flames. She ran to her boys' room and tried to open the door, but it was so hot, she couldn't touch it. She dashed to the bathroom, soaked a bath towel in cold water, wrapped her hand with it, opened the boys' bedroom door, sidestepped the roaring flames on the wall and along the floor, wrapped the towel around her sons' heads, picked them up -- one in each arm, and carried them outside to safety. As the fire department doused the flames, she spent her time helping bandage wounds of other residents and comforting their children and their young friends from the neighborhood.
