Ever since Jesus called the fisherman Peter and his companions and later re-called them in his post-resurrection appearances, the fish has become an important Christian symbol. In particular, during the first few centuries of the Christian era when Roman persecutions broke out, the fish became a sign whereby harassed believers communicated with one another. It was not uncommon when strangers met for one of them to draw a fish in the sand thus indicating his allegiance to Christ the Lord.
The first letters of each Greek word in the sentence: "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior," spell the word "fish."
The sign of the fish became an essential way of identifying Christians and bearing witness to their faith in the Savior.
