Every mother or grandmother who sews probably can tell a story of sewing a garment for
a child or grandchild. Whether it is homemade pajamas wrapped up under the Christmas
tree, or a flowing wedding gown, the sewer sees the face of the recipient before her, and
each stitch is a testament to her love.
Dolly Parton's "Coat of Many Colors" tells such a tale. Momma collected rags then sewed them together to make a coat for her daughter. The pieces of rags were attached with love and each was accompanied by the story of Joseph and his many-colored coat. The little girl proudly wore her new coat to school only to find the other children laughing at her coat. But she knew something that they didn't know: she was wrapped in more than a coat of rags, for in that homemade coat she was clothed in her mother's love.
Samuel probably felt much the same way when he put on his little ephod that his mother made for him.
