Everyone at Queen Elizabeth Middle School loved the vice-principal, Mrs. Johnston.
Mrs. Johnston, as well as being in charge of school discipline, taught history. What made
Mrs. Johnston so loveable was the fact that she never commanded her students; she asked
them. Even those whom she disciplined commented that she never raised her voice, never
said, "Do this!" Rather, she would say things like, "Why don't you...?" or "Don't you
think it would be good if you...?" She never abused her authority. She gently applied it on
her students. The response was overwhelmingly positive.
Paul, similarly, gently applies his authority. He doesn't command Philemon to take back his runaway slave; he asks him. Although we don't ever get to hear the result of this request, we almost always assume Philemon complied.
