February 9, 1964 was the date that the Beatles first entered American homes via appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show. A then record audience of seventy-three million viewers tuned in to watch them sing their hit song, "I Want to Hold Your Hand." The numbers of viewers led to a period of time reported as marked by the lowest crime rate in recorded history. During their tour crowds were enormous with lines awaiting tickets outstripping anything promoters had ever experienced. As the fortieth anniversary of their first visit was observed with the President's Award at this year's Grammy ceremonies, many fans attending those first concerts were interviewed to share their recollections. Those recollections and the continued popularity of the group's music attest the power of continued witness. For many fans the abiding images include their patient waiting for seats and tickets that ultimately provided their live exposure to the group.
