In a few days we will be celebrating Christopher Columbus' great discovery. I did not say the discovery of America since there is now some controversy as to whether he was the first to arrive on our shore. Regardless of how we feel about this, we must agree that he did make a perilous voyage across the Atlantic, and that he set foot on an island in the West Indies.
It is important to note that Columbus was a very religious man, and that he believed God was guiding him to his destination. And he was not ashamed to give God the credit for doing so! In an obscure volume of his journal, Book Of Prophecies, the explorer said:
"It was the Lord who put into my mind (I could feel His hand upon me) the fact that it would be possible to sail from here to the Indies. All who heard of my project rejected it with laughter, ridiculing me. There is no question that the inspiration was from the Holy Spirit, because he comforted me with rays of marvelous inspiration from the Holy Scriptures ... for the execution of the journey ... I did not make use of intelligence, mathematics, or maps ..."
Then he also wrote these words:
"No one should fear to undertake any task in the name of our Savior if it is just and if the intention is purely for His service."
Paul urges Timothy not to be ashamed to testify to the power of God through Christ. As we remember the voyage of Christopher Columbus, let us also testify to the evidence of his power in our lives.
