A few years ago, there was the film called The Natural based on Bernard Malamud's 1952 novel. Robert Redford portrayed Roy Hobbs, the farm boy whose dream was to become the best baseball player even in the major leagues. On the night of his father's death in 1918 on the Hobbs' farm, lightning struck a giant oak tree. Roy fashioned a baseball bat from a piece of its wood and named it "Wonderboy." In the motion picture, Roy is a hero whose life is traced to the final, decisive game.
The word hero came from an Indo-European base, "ser," to watch over and protect. In ancient mythology and legend, a hero was a man of great strength and courage, favored by the gods and in part descended from them. The word hero stands for any person admined for his courage, nobility, or exploits.
To our heroes we say what Elisha said to Elijah, "Leave me a double share of your spirit" (2 Kings 2:9, New Century Version).
