In the final chapter of Luke when Jesus appears to his disciples, he exhorts them in 24:49, "Stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." Without interpolating this text, we see that much of America is marked by urban blight, where the sprawling squalor of cities become incentives for churches to abandon them and seek residence in more sumptuous surroundings. The city has become a place where crime, violence and social anarchy are highly prevalent and fear terrorizes residents and places neighborhoods under siege. But many churches have stayed in the city, choosing to become agents of positive transformation, to help restore law and order. Ministries are created which take the "least of these" and the "have nots" and change them into the "best of the blessed" who have something worth living for. One urban pastor observed, "There is true power here among these people. With the help of the Holy Spirit we are able to change the lost into the found and the dispossessed into the possessed. We do everything we can to make the city a better place to live. Power has truly come from on high because we have chosen to stay and work and not run and be afraid. God has blessed us because we took something that others have thrown away and changed it into something that people want to come back to. Hasn't Jesus done the same with us? By taking those aspects of our lives that are unwanted, we have been changed into people worth having. Thank God for staying power in the city." -- Stewart
