Fire was recognized early, by Israel, as a purifying agent. They associated it with deity.
There are several places where the power of God, acting through Elijah, is symbolized by fire. The contest on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:38); the fiery death of a series of captains and their fifty men. (2 Kings 1:9-16)
So, it is fitting that Elijah's death should include the symbolism of fire: "A Chariot of fire [swept him] up by a whirlwind into heaven." (2 Kings 2:11)
The folk-song, "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," gives us an audio as well as a visual rendering of this poetic narrative of a miracle.
