The first time I ever...

The first time I ever experienced an automatic door opener was years ago in New York City. Having gone there by train I was in the large downtown station of the Pennsylvania Railroad. There I first experienced the wonder of a door opening for me as I approached it with my luggage. What a convenience it was not to have to put down my suitcases in order to turn a door knob and push a door open! Many people, passing through the door for the first time, were amazed at the wonder and questioned how it worked. They have now become commonplace and we know the doors are activated by a tiny beam of light, called an electric eye, on one side of the entrance. We know that anyone, by approaching the door, breaks the beam and causes the door to open. We cannot see the light as we approach, but its accomplishment is very real. In another respect, doors open for us in life by an unseen force. It is the Holy Spirit. He is the great intercessor who precedes us into the presence of Almighty God and lets our prayers be heard by our heavenly Father. He surrounds us in life with his mysterious power and presence, opening doors of opportunity and of service. He overcomes many of our life's obstructions. He develops our faith and helps us to live a Christian life. Indeed, life is made bearable because of the constant assistance of the unseen presence of Almighty God. -- Lentz
