Following the commandments out of love and devotion is one thing. Doing so out of grim duty is another. Franz Joseph Haydn, the famous Austrian composer, had his own struggles with the law governing marital fidelity. He kept the rule, but only woodenly.
Haydn enjoyed traveling because it took him away from his difficult wife. One day a visitor remarked on the large pile of unopened letters on Haydn's desk. "They're from my wife," the composer said. "We write to each other monthly, but I do not open her letters, and I am certain she doesn't open mine."
