Following the second World War...

Following the second World War churches were filled to capacity in many places. People attended and the life of the institutional church seemed strong and prosperous. But church membership declined as a result of the various social and political shifts of the 1960s. Now many mainline denominations are deeply concerned about these declining numbers, meeting the "needs" of the unchurched and being forced to close the doors of dying congregations. Where there are people returning to churches, pastors find that they often come during a life crisis (divorce, death of a family member, unemployment) or when in despair. Some come, weather the crisis and remain. Others leave once they are beyond the critical place.
