A football coach smiled as he looked over his team. He had handpicked the biggest, fastest, strongest boys he could find, and now he was determined to make them over into his own image.
It is only natural in sports to want the best players you can find, but why do we go through the same kind of selection process in other areas of life? Are we that competitive? It could be said that it is just human nature to prefer people who are whole and hardy, good-looking and fun to be aroun. Why is it so difficult to accept people who are physically or mentally challenged, or who come from a different social-economic class and whose skin color might be different than our own? Why is diversity such a big deal to us? Suppose differences mattered to God? Would any of us be accepted based on our similarities to God? And if we were accepted, who among us would be chosen?
In the selection process, what is it that makes your friends your friends? Is your friend the one who accepts you just as you are? Being made one with God means that we sinners become no longer "unacceptable"; we are now accepted just as we are -- imperfections and all. We have unity with God only because of the Lord Jesus Christ.
