"Former things shall be no more remembered nor shall they be recalled to mind," (Isaiah 65:17) wrote the author of this passage. There is a "Holy Amnesia." The word "amnesia," meaning a complete or partial loss of memory, came from two Greek words: "a" (not) and "mimneskesthai" (to recall).
This "Holy Amnesia" has three dimensions. There is the divine dimension. In a passage about the New Covenant which Christ applied to himself, Jeremiah pictured God practicing the art of holy amnesia on himself: "All them, high and low alike, shall know me, says the Lord, for I will forgive their wrongdoing and remember their sin no more" (Jeremiah 31:34). There is the social dimension. Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers. He became the prime minister of Egypt. When Joseph married and a son was born, he named the boy Manasseh. This name sounded like the Hebrew for "cause of forget." Joseph said, "God has caused me to forget all my troubles" (Genesis 41:51). He did not bear a grudge against his brothers. There is the personal dimension. How tempting it is to linger over old hurts. It is healthier to practice "holy amnesia" and put those hurts behind you.
