Forty years ago next month (June 6, 1961), Martin Luther King, Jr., gave the commencement address at Lincoln University in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The great black orator called his graduation remarks, "The American Dream." King told the graduates that day: "The world in which we live is a world of geographical oneness and we are challenged now to make it spiritually one." The message echoes in our ears today in the new millennium. Christians unbounded by denomination can seek social justice for each other. We can have a praxis of service by doing those things that must be done to promote peace in the world.
John saw in his revelation on the island of Patmos a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people, and language standing together as brothers and sisters. God brings peace with no more hunger, no more thirst, and no more fire. The good shepherd leads us all to the springs of living water.
Dr. King told the students at the Lincoln University commencement that "the world in which we live has become a single neighborhood." Indeed, one awesome, powerful, incomprehensible God guides the lives of each one of us.
