Frank Laubach, missionary to the illiterate people of the world, understood Jesus' words that if anyone wishes to be first in the kingdom of God he must be last and a servant of all.
Once when visiting in Africa, Laubach was shown a magnificent hydroelectric plant which ran the mills on a Firestone plantation. Inside the plant was a huge pipe and four great turbine wheels. He wondered why the turbines were not running. He was told that the pipe was closed at the outlet. Once that pipe was open the water could flow through. In order for the turbines to run, both the inlet and the outlet needed to be open.
Laubach later commented: "That is the way our lives are. The pipe must be open up toward God and open down toward others. And then currents flow through and the wheels go round and we work with the power of God."
The way to greatness is the way of being open toward God and toward other human beings so that the love of God can flow through us into the lives of others.
