A friend of mine decided to attend a quit smoking class at a nearby church. When I asked him what advice the class members received, he said, "First, we were asked to set a date in the future when we expected to quit smoking altogether. The date had to be firmly set in our minds. Then they taught us how to reduce our smoking. We were to begin by placing our cigarettes in a different spot than normal. If we carried them in our right shirt pocket, now we were to carry them in our left pocket. That way, when our hand reached automatically for the pack and did not find it, we would consciously realize what we were doing. That way, we can begin break the habit." Jesus' instructions are similar, although expressed in exaggerated terms for emphasis: "If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off...." In other words, don't just resolve to resist temptation; instead, get rid of the means so that you can be free at hand. -- Bristow
