A friend of mine traveled to Nicaragua in the early 1980s before the U.S. supported Contra war made the news. She visited with priests and nuns, with political leaders and businessmen, with soldiers and peasant farmers. When she returned to the States she spoke to church and civic groups. She told of the pointless destruction in rural villages and poverty and hunger exacerbated by the U.S. embargo; of booklets that had been printed and distributed by the CIA encouraging citizens of Nicaragua to overthrow their government and giving them instructions concerning effective sabotage; of deliberate disinformation being supplied to U.S. news sources in order to create a negative view of Nicaragua so that a war effort would be supported.
Many people rejected her claims. They ostracized her, calling her unpatriotic and a communist sympathizer. Even when the truth of her claims made national news some months later, the people of the community would not believe her.
History is full of stories about how the messenger is rejected for reporting the truth. Our Jeremiah text is another example. The Egyptian army had come to the rescue of Judah and together they repelled the army of Babylon. But Jeremiah announced a word from the Lord, "The Babylonian army will be back, and Judah will be destroyed." This message so enraged the officials that Jeremiah was arrested and imprisoned.
