Gary Wills captioned his study of the Kennedy family, The Kennedy Imprisonment: A Meditation on Power. The study reveals contrasts in style of character and administration of presidents from Franklin Roosevelt through Gerald Ford. Wills observed how each of these presidents viewed their roles differently. Each, of course, had a different self-image. Each also had a different sense of power and how it was to be used.
The marks of power are different for the variety of people on whom the power is conferred. Most generally, the people in power do not reveal openly their strategies for dealing with power. They just act. We are not always sure they know how to count the cost of their actions, anymore than we are sure of their motivations.
