The British surgeon Joseph Lister drew upon this truth when negotiating a fee with a grateful patient. The gentleman, an English nobleman wealthy beyond measure, had come to the physician in panic. He had lodged a fish bone in his throat and feared it might not be possible to remove it. With great skill the surgeon carefully and successfully removed the bone.
The patient asked Lister to name his fee. The physician smiled and said, "My lord, suppose we settle for half of what you would consider its removal to be worth to you if the bone were still lodged in your throat."
