God's record in history is...

God's record in history is unique. It does not always appear that way. H.G. Wells, in his Outline of History, suggested a long time ago that the history of the kings of Israel reads like the stories of savage chiefs rather than that of civilized monarchs. However, Wells also had to confess that it was not the task of the historian to make judgments on the veracity or falsity of religion, but only to report the appearance of how great constructive ideas appeared on the scene of human history. That is a proper admission.
Anyone who views the history of Israel only from the perspective of the historian would have to judge God's experiment with this unique people as a giant failure. However, that is not how faith reads it. From the very beginning, before God had even chosen his special people, God was hard at work in redeeming history for the sake of his people. In spite of the frustrations God experienced in dealing with people, God made fresh starts over and over again.
