Greed is not only for gold or for thirty pieces of silver. Some are greedy for fame, some for power. They will even betray those closest to them to achieve these ends. There are parents who have virtually sold their children into a life of shame through their indifference.
I know of a home today, beautiful and palatial, but spiritually empty. A gray-haired couple live there, lonely and introspective. Somewhere in the world is their only child, a son. Where he is, they do not know. The mother was a social climber; the father was anxious to get to the top in his business. While they were occupied with these pursuits, their child grew up, neglected -- not by material deprivation, because he had food and clothing and toys and was sent to good schools and camps. But he had parents who did not care, or so he felt. One day he disowned his family and went away.
