A group of tourists came to Oberammergau to see the world-
famous Passion Play. They had connections which made it possible for them to go backstage and meet some of the actors. They were thrilled to see the costumes and the props used in the performance. Anton Lang himself, the man who played the part of Christ several years, was their guide. They came to the large cross which Christ carries in the Via Dolorosa scene. One of the visitors hesitantly asked if he might pick up the cross, and Mr. Lang nodded affirmatively. So the man from America put his shoulder under the cross and began to lift it, but it was so heavy, and far more difficult than he had imagined. He turned to Mr. Lang and said: "I don't understand. Why don't you have them make you a cross which looks heavy but is actually light? No one in the audience would know the difference." Mr. Lang responded: "It is true that you don't understand. You see, if I didn't feel the weight of the cross, I couldn't play the part of Christ."
