Grudgingly one has to acknowledge Sun Myung Moon's success with young people. The founder and head of the Unification Church has been especially attractive to young people who come from broken homes, who have been a part of the drug scene, or who have been surfeited with comforts. Generally, these people have been critical of the lack of love in mainline churches. It is not difficult for them to point out the disparity between the ideals and the behavior of Christians. The vision of the cross has been blurred, and Christians have not been good followers of the cross, they would insist. Consequently, they argue that we need a new revelation, and that God has given that revelation through Mr. Moon in the same way God revealed himself in our Lord Jesus Christ. Our failure to follow the cross as we should is no new criticism. Through the ages reform movements have begun in the effort to help people be better followers of the cross. Denomination after denomination, sect after sect, have been founded in the hopes of making better followers of the cross. Christian devotional material, like the classic Imitation of Christ, also aimed at making better followers of the cross. Christian mystics devised devotional exercises and rituals to make their disciples better followers of the cross. Yet it is our Lord himself who makes the claim that he is the One to make us better followers of the cross. -- Huxhold
