Had Charles V, ruler of the Holy Roman Empire, heeded Jesus' words about which kingdom to seek, he would have experienced less strife in his attempt to rule central Europe in a God-pleasing way. On one occasion, it was suggested to the monarch that conflicts with his cousin, Francis I, King of France, would lead to never-ending strife on the continent.
