Harold Kohn was a remarkable man. He was an artist, pastor, author and counselor. He published 12 volumes of meditations and sermons, most of which dealt with nature and the beauty of God's created order. He illustrated each of those volumes. His reputation as a marriage counselor, especially for ministers and their spouses, was so widespread that people came from distances as far away as 100 miles. He was in great demand as a speaker on college campuses and at church assembles.
What made his accomplishments remarkable is that he achieved them while enduring great suffering. As a young pastor in Chicago he developed a severe allergy to air pollution. He moved to northern Michigan, on Lake Charlevoix, where after a few years he developed a slow growing brain tumor. As he told it to me, "Every day for the past 18 years, I have had an excruciating headache."
Perhaps in spite of his pain or, as Paul suggests, perhaps due to his suffering, Harold Kohn was a man to whom others turned for counsel, inspiration, and just a cheery word of encouragement. His suffering had produced endurance which led to character which led to that hope which does not disappoint.
