Have you ever known anyone with agoraphobia? This is an irrational fear or dread of open places. It involves, quite often, panic attacks where the sufferer can experience heart palpitation, elevated blood pressure, mental confusion and disorientation, pains in the chest, and the seeming inability to breathe well. Once the adrenaline is pumping it is hard to calm the person down. Scientists say that we all have a fight or flight activator. In other words, if we see something we fear our body prepares us to fight it or run away from it. Our glands start pumping so we have extra energy. In agoraphobia, however, the "thing" feared is hard to define. There is nowhere to run, so the fear persists. Some sufferers literally stay in their house all the time and cannot leave it.
The disciples were shut up in a room because of fear. Their faith was not yet strong. They feared death. Into this situation came Jesus, and twice he said to them, "Peace." Peace is an absence of fear and anxiety. It has to do with trusting God. You and I cannot trust and be afraid at the same time.
