Have you ever made a time capsule? One school that I know of put a time capsule in their cornerstone in 1962. They included notes from every class in the school, newspaper headlines, and souvenirs of major events in the life of those school children.
That was a time when those same school children were being drilled each month on how to behave in case of an air raid, crawling under desks and chairs and protecting their heads from flying debris. One of the headlines could have been focused on the Cold War or the Cuban missile crisis. Those events reflected for all of us alive then the fearful future, the possibility that the world as we knew it could end any day. The capsule, on the other hand, reflected the hope that there would be human beings around in a hundred or a thousand years who would open the cornerstone and find the buried evidence that we had been here, and had that hope.
