Have you thought about the hours of darkness? They can be ambiguous, interesting, distressful and happy times --especially those which have been significant for all of humanity.
Some of the world's most important events have taken place at night. Jacob dreams and struggles with the angel then. Samuel hears the voice of the Lord calling to him. The Hebrew people flee oppression in the dead of night.
Jesus' life and ministry are marked by the hours of darkness. His father, Joseph, listens to the Lord through a dream. Nicodemus sneaks in at night to have a life-changing conversation with Jesus. A band of disciples celebrates the paschal feast at night over supper. Arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane by the light of the torch. And at the hour of Jesus' death, darkness falls on the land.
And right at the beginning of Jesus' life, we find the scene of his birth surrounded by the deep darkness of the night. Suddenly the night is the womb of the Lord! A child is born. A star takes on new significance for its followers. Shepherds hear the angels and travel to Bethlehem.
What began in darkness, a sheltered and quiet event, is made known to the world and light and darkness dance together.
