At the heart of this...

At the heart of this Scripture is the principle of humility. Doing things for people and not expecting a band with 76 trombones inaugurating its march up the street in praise of you.
Humility, not self-effacement. H umility, not begging the question with personal put-me-downs. Actually, it's hard to talk about humility for its best witness is made in silence. Humble people don't talk about its acquisition. Did you hear about the man whose friends gave him a badge for humility but took it back because he wore it? Humble people don't overly listen to the accolades or spend a lot of time reading the kudos. The great preacher Wallace Hamilton was at a banquet with his wife and had moved away from her a few feet to talk to someone he hadn't seen in a while. Another person moved in and asked Mrs. Hamilton how it felt to be married to a great preacher. She put her forefinger to her lips, hushed the man, looked over toward her husband and back to the questioner, and said, "He doesn't know he's a great preacher."
Humble people don't listen to much talk about themselves and don't talk much about themselves. They don't know they're great. They don't even know they're humble.
