Herman Melville wrote what many consider to be the Great American Novel, Moby Dick. He began work on it during the spring of 1850 and finished the book in the summer of 1851 at his new home named Arrowhead in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
Arrowhead consisted of 160 acres of land with an extraordinary view of Mount Greylock in the Berkshires. From his second floor study, Melville positioned his writing desk right in front of the window so he could see Mount Greylock in the distance. To Melville, the mountain looked like a great whale rising out of the sea. This sight of a "transfigured" mountain inspired Herman Melville as he worked on his masterpiece.
