In the hills of Eastern Kentucky, two churches, five miles apart and pastored by the same circuit-rider, were dedicated within the same week. One was a small, aristocratic downtown church which had been completely renovated with plush carpeting, new furniture, and colorful stained-glass windows. The other church, in a farming community, was a log church with clear windows, bare wooden flooring, and handmade pews. A local builder who had worked on both churches spoke to the pastor. "I decided to join one of the churches, but could not choose between the two, so as you know, I have attended both for some weeks and now I have decided what to do." "I am anxious to know which one you will attend," said the pastor, "and the reason for your choice." "It was difficult," said the builder. "I enjoy the reverent atmosphere and the great choir at the town church, but I am also impressed by the simplicity and warmth in the small church. I tried to choose between the congregations, but I know people in both and like them all. And, both congregations seem equally committed in their service to God. Thus, I have decided to join the church which may benefit the most by my membership." "And ..." urged the pastor. "And, I believe that is a decision best made by you, Pastor. You make the choice!" -- Byrd
