In his article "Judaism Beyond Words" in the journal Commentary (September 2002), David Gelernter comments that Moses' veil is but one of many such images in Judaism that represent the mystery and transcendence of God. (Other images include the shofar, with its unmusical wailing sound; the Western Wall, the blank, imposing remnant of the Temple; and the unsayable proper name of God for which another word was substituted, sometimes simply "Hashem," meaning "The Name.") Part of the ceremony in the synagogue even today is for anyone of priestly descent to wrap the tallis (prayer shawl) over the head and lifted hands while saying the benediction (Numbers 6:24-26), reflecting God's light shining upon the people. While in prayer every day, the devout worshiper (male) will wrap himself in the tallis, covering his head as a sign that he is in the presence of God, who is ineffable light.
