In his book, Wherefore Art Thou Come, James Cleland gives a special meaning to Maundy Thursday. He tells that one of the worst sections of battle on the Western Front in World War I was an area called the Ypres salient. It was the center of terrible trench warfare for many months. In the British sector of the Allied fortifications, the soldiers had erected a wooden hut, which was the meeting place of men going to and coming from the trenches. Over the doorway was an inscription carved into the wood --Abandon Rank All Ye Who Enter Here.
Each night the soldiers were in this area, one of the chaplains would celebrate the Lord's supper in the left of the hut. It was truly a "last" supper for many of them. And yet, it must have been helpful to those who died in the trenches to be reminded of God's covenant with his followers.
