In his recent book, The Outsider, Howard Fast describes a scene where a young Jewish rabbi is receiving his first assignment to a small Jewish community, north of New York City. His superior says "You must love your congregation, even when they're least loveable -- which can be frequently." The old experienced rabbi continues with more sobering spiritual directives: "Don't expect righteousness or even integrity. You teach it. And don't expect gratitude. It is very precious and in time it will come, but don't expect it."
St. Paul, himself a former rabbi, didn't expect to find the depth of faith in the Ephesian people which was clearly present. He rejoices in his happy discovery and envisions outstanding future accomplishments from this community at Ephesus.
God's graces, of course, can produce marvelous results, and a talented and faith-filled pastor can certainly further many good causes and deepen the religious convictions of a congregation. Yet, the parishioners should always realize it is their personal faith and spirit of communal charity which are vital to the life of their church.
Pastors are assigned and reassigned and, it is hoped, each one brings some unique enrichment, but every member has the opportunity and obligation to minister to each other and to their pastor.
