How can we grasp the sheer joy of the day of the Lord? Reading this passage, one picture comes to mind: a photograph which Life magazine made famous of a sailor grabbing a young woman in Times Square and kissing her enthusiastically. The occasion was V-J day, and these two people didn't even know each other, the story goes, but the thrill of the victory, the relief that the threat of destruction was removed, the exuberance of being able to stop fighting and go back to normal life was so overwhelming, the sailor "just needed to kiss somebody!" Can we believe that this is the way we're supposed to feel about the coming of God? "A day of festival ... [when God] will bring you home!"? -- Herrmann
