"How do we recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives?" This question appears in "The Catechism" of Episcopal Church's liturgy, The Book of Common Prayer (page 852). The answer given is: "We recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit when we confess Jesus Christ as Lord and are brought into love and harmony with God, with ourselves, with our neighbors, and with all creation." We certainly need God's help to establish such harmony! Glendon E. Harris (Pulpit Resource, Volume 11, No. 1, p. 38) reminds us of the "Harmony Society." It was a small pietist religious group that came to America from Germany in 1803. They wanted "to live in perfect harmony." They established a community in Butler County, Pennsylvania. At first, they seemed to live in harmony. In 1815, they moved to Posey County, Indiana, where they set up a new village called "Harmony (later called New Harmony)." Disharmony led to a split in 1832. Members slowly left the community. In 1903 there were only four members left. The colony was disbanded and the property sold.
