I applied for ordination while I was serving a small country church. The process of approval for ordination involves submitting written materials to the Board of Ordained Ministry and then having a personal interview with them. After review, the Board either approves or disapproves the application. When I completed this process, I learned that I was not approved. I was hurt, disappointed, and confused by their decision. Didn't God call me into the ministry? How could I be rejected like this? I didn't sleep at all the night I learned of my rejection. Early the next morning, I found myself in the kitchen of Mrs. Smith. She was both a neighbor and a parishioner. I was literally crying on her shoulder about my letdown. Mrs. Smith assured me that God had a future in store for me. She enabled me to swallow my disappointment and continue on in ministry. She was the voice of God speaking directly to me. In retrospect, I can see God's hand moving in that rejection. What I thought was the worst thing that ever happened to me actually turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened. While one Conference rejected my application, another Conference accepted a subsequent application and I am very happy in my new locale.
