"I, Nathan, take you, Katherine, to be my wife. And I promise ... " A public statement, acknowledging before the gathered community that a particular relationship exists between two people. A commitment, honoring the other individual and stating the speaker's responsibilities within the relationship. Such public statements matter in our world. Friends and family treat married couples different from the way they treat other, less formalized relationships. The individuals involved must live their lives in ways that were not possible before. Financial and legal commitments shift. Emotional and physical ties change. The public statement of commitment to marriage marks the beginning of a new focus in life. By publicly acknowledging Jesus as the anointed one, Peter's relationship with Jesus shifted, as did his leadership role within that early community of Jesus' followers. Such public statements matter.
