I remember reading somewhere that when the news of the 1944 D-Day landing filtered into one prisoner of war camp in Germany, it invigorated and encouraged the prisoners, because even though they knew their liberation was still months or even a year or two away, they knew it was inevitable. I was recently talking with a young woman telling me about her plans for graduate school. She is only in her second year of undergraduate studies, but she knew that it is inevitable that she will complete her studies and move on to something else. A football team received horrible field position, finding themselves on their own two-yard line. The way they took the field, and the way they controlled the field on their first couple of plays convinced the fans and commentators that they were going to take the ball all the way down the field to score. It took sixteen plays, and not every play was successful, but they did score the winning touchdown with seconds remaining in the game. A line in the Korean Creed reads, "We believe in the final triumph of righteousness." This is a confident statement. The evidence is not always apparent; righteousness does not always triumph. There are moments when we might even wonder if righteousness is losing ground. But we continue on with the confidence that we will be liberated, we will graduate from this school of hard knocks, and we will arrive at the goal. Like the ancient hymn writer, we believe in the day when "every knee shall bow, every tongue confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord."
