I remember visiting Niagara Falls...

I remember visiting Niagara Falls and being deeply impressed by the depth to which the water cascaded in a mighty tumble to the water level far below. Knowing what a thrill it would be to some people to ride across that deep gorge and look at the Falls from eye level, some enterprisers long ago constructed a cable car to make the crossing over the gorge. The cables hardly seem large enough or strong enough to give much reassurance, but in many years of use they have proven to be completely adequate for carrying the cable car filled with tourists. Many a person has been able to brag about riding the cable car at Niagara Falls. But as I was standing at the terminal of the cable car crossing, I heard the ticket-seller talking to a woman. She wanted to take the ride but hesitated to do so. She could not bring herself to trust the cables to carry her in safety, and the drop to the river below was terrifying. The ticket-seller was trying to convince her. In reassuring tones he said to her: "Lady, those cables from which the car is suspended are five times stronger than they need to be to safely carry the car across. Do you believe that?" "Yes, I do," she replied. He continued: "That cable car has made the crossing about 60,000 times over the years and there has never been an accident. Do you believe that?" "Yes," she replied again. "Then will you buy a ticket for a ride?" he asked. "No," she answered. In her mind she could figure out that the ride was safe, but the fear in her heart was too much to believe in the ride and so to trust her life to it. This is a parable of faith. Faith is not just mental assent. It means believing all the way to trusting one's life completely to Christ. It means living a life of action which gives evidence of living by that faith from day to day. -- Lentz
