I used to drive by a peaceful-looking lake in southeastern Minnesota that was surrounded by oak trees and rolling hills. Deer were plentiful there, and one could often see geese on the lake. That scene sticks in my mind as what I hope heaven will be like.
C. S. Lewis, in one of his novels, once described heaven as being like a fruit orchard with the sweetest, most delicious fruit one could ever imagine.
What is heaven like? According to this Revelation text there are voices that sound like trumpets, people in white robes with golden crowns, and strange Star Wars kinds of beasts who guard the throne and sing praises to God. What will we do in heaven? John of Patmos describes an eternal hymn sing of praise and glory songs.
John wanted to portray the majesty and might of this God who has the power to overcome all earthly tyrants. His description may have brought comfort and confidence to persecuted Christians in the first century A.D.
Do you think this scene with strange beasts and thunder and lightning sounds heavenly? Do you get excited about this description of what you will be doing for all eternity?
Be assured that no earthly picture will ever do justice to what God is like, what heaven is like, and what God has in store for us there. Rest assured that it will be far greater than anything we've ever imagined.
