If I were living to...

If I were living to myself, I'd consider defrauding an innkeeper without a conscience twang. But if I were convinced none of us lives to ourselves, I'd think twice.
The famous American comedian, Jackie Gleason, told what it was like trying to survive in the days when he was still trying to make a name for himself. Cash was short, and he was looking for every way to cut a corner he could find.
While performing at a nightclub in a seaside town, Gleason stayed at a local boardinghouse. Finding himself unable to pay the rent, he devised a way of escaping from his lodgings without raising suspicion. He packed up his belongings, lowered the suitcase out of his bedroom window into the arms of a waiting friend, then strolled nonchalantly out of the house wearing his swimming trunks, heading for the beach.
Three years later, anxious to pay off the debt, he returned to the boardinghouse. The landlady, recognizing him at once, stepped back in horror, as if she had seen a ghost. "Oh, my Lord!" she exclaimed. "I thought you were drowned!"
