If I were throwing a neighborhood party I know for certain I would not invite John the Baptist. First of all his dress would be outlandish. Camel's hair and a big leather belt around his waist. Then I would offer him the food of the day at which he would sneer and pull out a pouch of locusts and wild honey. Who knows what he might say to my guests. This could be the scenario you know. "No, John, go hang out around the Jordan River and let us get on with our festivities."
But ... but, if I wanted a person to proclaim the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, I would for sure scout out John wherever he might be and then step back and let him have his due for the sake of the Lord. With fully expanded lungs he would announce, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." This forerunner was not easy on people. In the Matthew account, he strikes out at the uppercrust, the Pharisees and Sadducees, when he labels them a "brood of vipers."
In "big time wrestling" the 350 pounders scream at each other, supposedly stomp on the other's head and proclaim they will get even in their next match. That is all show, glitz and glitter. But not so with John the Baptist. He was very serious about his calling and he did want to get the people ready for the Messiah. He was baptizing folks with water but he knew the powerful one to follow would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. He would separate the wheat from the chaff.
We do not have a John the Baptist to wake us from any spiritual sleep we might be in, none except for his presence in the New Testament. So we need to honor him when we can and utilize this message as it rolls around periodically. Jesus saw John as being a very important member of his team and was even baptized by John. Today, let us permit John to shout at us if that is what we need to awaken us and for Jesus Christ to love us if that is our yearning.
