Incredibly, some of us turn down God's urgent invitations because we simply can't be bothered. It must vex and amaze the almighty to learn what some of our excuses become. Such was the case with three messengers who came with urgent communications for the seventeenth-century French scholar, Federic Morel. The first courier found Morel engrossed in translating a Latin text. He interrupted Morel to inform him that his wife lay gravely ill. "I have only two or more passages to translate," Morel said, not looking up. Some time later, a second messenger arrived with the news that the scholar's wife had almost no time left to live. "Just two more words," Morel replied. Still a third messenger came, this one with dire news. "Your wife is dead," he announced. Morel sighed and said, "I am grieved indeed. She was a good woman." Immediately he returned to his translating.
