An inheritance is a powerful gift. Theodore Roosevelt first visited the Badlands of North Dakota in 1883. He often commented that he would have never been president but for his experiences in North Dakota. During his time spent there, he became alarmed over the damage being done to the land and the creatures dependent upon it. Big game species like buffalo and big horn sheep were rapidly disappearing. Overgrazing was having a dramatic impact on the grasslands and the animals reliant on those grasses. Conservation became an important concern. During his presidency, he would establish the United States Forest Service and sign the 1906 Antiquities Act. This Act proclaimed eighteen national monuments. He led the establishment of five national parks, 51 wildlife refuges, and 150 national forests. These areas have become an important legacy for the United States.
