Irene lives with chronic pain...

Irene lives with chronic pain -- pain that needs to be controlled with morphine in order for her to carry out her responsibilities. Yet, she somehow manages to be one of the happiest and most contented people I know.
One day her pastor asked her how she managed to work the hours that she did.
"My pain is a blessing," she said. "I don't mean that God gave me the pain to make me a better person. But because of my pain I am able to see pain in others. Our shared experience enriches both of our lives. Because of my pain I can appreciate how awesomely God has created us. There is not a day that goes by that I don't give thanks to God for all that I am able to do. Because of my pain I am forced to make decisions about what I am going to do that day. I give thanks for all that I am able to do, whether it is talking for an hour with a member of my parish, or driving for three hours along a bumpy road. I've found that I appreciate what I can do because of the things that I can't do. Because of the pain, I live my life giving thanks instead of complaining about the things that go wrong."
