Isaiah describes a world covered...

Isaiah describes a world covered in darkness ... night — deep, dark night. How often have we known such thick darkness in our human history? Today we bemoan the acts of terrorism that beset our world; wars and strife in many lands; hunger and disease in Africa; floods and earthquakes that destroy the homes of those least able to rebuild their lives. Yet, these trials are not new. Through all the ages of humankind wars have raged, humans have treated each other inhumanely, natural disasters have devastated God's children on every continent, and tyrants have personified the sum of all evil in their actions and motivations. "Darkness shall cover the earth," writes the prophet. But we need not look only to the pages of history to see the darkness that covers the earth, for we may see it in our own hearts: fear, loneliness, hatred, envy, grief, and guilt. These are some of the clouds of darkness that can gather in our hearts and obscure the light of God's love.
God is not content to let us live in the darkness, so he sends Isaiah to proclaim a light that will chase away the thick darkness. "Arise, shine! Your light has come!" It is the glory of the Lord which illumines not only the dark pages of history, bringing freedom to the oppressed, comfort to the afflicted, healing to the broken, and the evil ones to justice, but also light to the darkness within each of us. God promises a Messiah. God promises salvation. God promises a light to shine in our darkness.
